In case you have been avoiding the internet for the past few weeks, the world has been abuzz about a purported room-temperature superconductor called LK-99.
I don't necessarily disagree with your thoughts here, but this LK99 saga started because the authors decided to publish a very weak paper where they didn't do the due diligence. This is not exactly how progress is made.
I have to agree with this. It seems like a weak paper somehow went viral and was leapt upon by a lot of confident sounding people who were far from expert in the field. Whereas had you followed people who were experts, you'd have had a much more realistic sense of the (low) potential here.
